Wayne Memorial (3/27) - Two Dominating "Winns" for Milford
The Winn family came in force to Wayne, including grandparents, to watch the Winn girls tally seven goals for the night, and see both varsity and JV teams “WINN” by 8-0 scores.
The Lady Mavs varsity came out blazing against Wayne Memorial off the opening kick with two quick goals in the first two minutes of the game, both scored by junior Ryan Winn, with assists by junior Hayley Bensek and sophomore Sam Sturgeon. Winn continued to punish the Zebra defense with two more breakaway goals in the half, one assisted by junior Adrien Allward.
Also in the first half, freshman Sarah Bonhard made her mark on the varsity, scoring her first Milford goal to the far post off a pass in the middle from Allward. Co-captain Michelle Dant got on the board, gathering a pass from Bonhard from the wing, and took it straight to the net punching it by the diving goalkeeper. After several breakaway attacks, Allward took her turn when she took the ball at midfield, ran it down the middle and shot just inside the 18 to the far post for the score. Jaclyn Stohler also took a couple of shots just wide of the goal. Defensive co-captain Tess Zasuwa got into the attack with some long shots, including a free kick that just missed.
It didn’t take long for Milford in the second half, when Dant took the ball down the left wing all the way to the end line and turned toward the goal, reminiscent of Mia Hamm, and fed a pass back to Bonhard waiting on the six, who fired it past the Zebra keeper for her second goal of the game. The defense didn’t get too much action, but did their job when called on.
“Great team scores were created with much improved offensive play. Special mention for Ryan Winn with four goals, Sarah Bonhard scoring her first two Varsity goals, Alyssa Adams and Sam Sturgeon for stepping up and playing in goal”, said coach Mike Gilmore.
Milford evened their record for the season at 1-1-0.
The JV also pounded the Wayne JV defense with an 8-0 score. The Lady Mavs opened up the action with a score by Liana Bottenberg, her first as a Maverick, who also had an assist for the night. Another Winn, this time Erin, picked the Zebras apart with three goals of her own. Morgan Watkins added a goal (her first as a Maverick) with two more shots on goal. Sophomore Alex Petersen scored her first goal as a Maverick.
In the second half, junior tri-captain Paige Miller also continued her scoring ways, putting two goals on the board. In the first half, solid defense and goalkeeper Casey Kubat kept Wayne from generating any significant pressure. In the second half, Wayne put together two good attacks on goal, both stopped by goalkeeper Kayla Cupp. The JV evened their record at 1-1-0.
Brighton (3/25) - Top State Team Takes Milford's Home Opener
The varsity opened up their regular season and first game of the newly formed KLAA West conference with the highly state-rated Brighton, and played tough defense in the first half to limit the attacks of the Bulldogs, ending in a close 1-0 half. But, the Lady Mavs may have gotten worn down a bit in the second half, as Brighton started to develop some heavier congestion in front of the keeper, and scored a couple of quick goals to break open the game, and cruised on to a 6-0 victory.
“The girls put in a great effort and really worked hard for each other against a very strong Brighton team that was ranked 4th in the state last season. Special mention for Sam Sturgeon and Michelle Dant, who worked tirelessly in the central midfield area,” said coach Gilmore.
The JV also opened up their regular season against Brighton, and found the Bulldogs to be loaded with soccer talent. The Mavs spent most of their time trying to thwart the continuous attacks of the Bulldogs, with the game ending 8-0.
