2009 MHS Alumni Soccer Game

INFO & GAME REPORTS:

CAR WASH: A huge success at the Comeback Inn on a rainy day, making over $500. THANK YOU to Shelly Howard and Judy Darby for organizing this fundraiser. Many parents/players returned to the Inn after the Alumni game, since they were extremely generous enough to care for the girls during the rain with a room and food.

ALUMNI GAME: The first game in several years was a great success. Alumni years represented spanned from 2004-2008, including some Redskins and some familiar parents, with Kathy Zasuwa putting a little extra spice into the announcing. The mighty Alumni played the intimidation game well for the first part of the game, and they played strong to the end, backing off the Lady Mav varsity some, but reputation alone doesn't win games. The lack of subs, soccer conditioning and apparent extra curricular activity at their colleges became more evident as the game moved into the second half. Coach Gilmore even tried to revive the gasping Alumni, but to no avail, as the game ended 4-1 . . . varsity . . . this time. But, we heard that the alumni will be recruiting heavily next year to try to avenge the tough loss. The varsity record is now 1-0, while the Alumni fell to 0-1. A special thanks to Lindsay Allward (2007) for organizing the Alumni team.

Milford Dominates Howell on Senior Night (5/7)

Even though the score didn't reflect the possession time that Milford controlled the ball, which was over 80% most of the night, the Lady Mavs did what they needed to do to win the game, 2-1. And, a good win on Senior night for Angie Pasciolla and Shannon Dunn.

The first half must have been a wake-up call for the Mavericks, especially after Howell found the net just before the half ended.

The Mavs charged up and started getting multiple chances at the net. Juniors co-captain Michelle Dant and Adrien Allward supplied the attack up front, the Winn sisters (Ryan and Erin) attacked from the outside, and junior co-captain Tess Zasuwa and sophomore Sammy Sturgeon controlled the midfield.

"The girls played great and completely controlled the game. We missed several chances by a matter of inches in the first half that would have put the game to bed much earlier. The girls worked really hard for the win after a tough couple of weeks against some very strong opposition. We will be looking to build on the win as we head into the Districts", said Coach Mike Gilmour.

The second half was a different story. Early in the half, a good combination with Zasuwa starting the play in at midfield, fed the ball to Allward, who attacked the defense, and side stepped a couple of defenders, and chipped over the keeper to the far post for her third goal of the season.

Energy clearly returned to the Mavs as they turned up the pressure on the Highlanders with several outstanding runs and opportunities.

Milford's second goal came when the Mavs attacked the Highlander keeper, and the ball came out to Sturgeon at the 20, who took a great shot that found the upper corner for her third goal of the season. Several quality shots were spread around, including shots from junior co-captain Michelle Dant, and freshmen Sara Bonhard and Erin Winn.

The defense did their part to limit Howell to just two shots on goal the entire night, led by Dunn, juniors Alyssa Adams, Hayley Benzek, and Kara Johnson, and sophomore Max Howard. And, Pasciolla grabbed a couple of shots at the net.

Gilmour added, "Zasuwa and Sturgeon controlled the central midfield position, with Ryan and Erin Winn supplying great speed on the flanks and delivering some great crosses. Allward and Dant always looked like a threat up top. Allward and Sturgeon both took well taken goals. Dunn and Pasciolla both had good games on senior night."

Milford's record is now 4-7-2, and Howell dropped to 5-9-0. The final regular season games this week for Milford are both away at Pinckney and Fenton.

Milford's JV tied Howell 0-0.
