Lakeland (4/3) - Milford's defense stymies Lakeland

Milford used their strong defensive backfield to contain Lakeland in a close 1-0 game. Milford looked like they were going to mount some sustained offense, when they scored early on their first attack of the game, but neither team was able to score after that.

In the first four minutes of the game, Milford sent the ball out wide to junior winger Hayley Bensek, who took the ball down to the corner, and sent a good cross pass into the box in front of senior Eagle keeper Samantha Miller. Then, the Mav’s freshman attacker Erin Winn, playing her first unforgettable game on varsity, was positioned perfectly to redirect the ball into the nets for her first goal, and as it turned out, the game winning goal.

Then, the Milford defense took over to control the game, as they kept the Eagles from mounting much offense. The starting group for the Mav’s defense was led by co-captain Tess Zasuwa, Alyssa Adams, Shannon Dunn and Max Howard, with help from Kara Johnson, limited the Eagles to just two shots on goal the entire night. For Dunn, it was probably one her finest defensive efforts as a Maverick.

Milford did well to control of the middle of the field much of the night with strong play from junior midfielders co-captain Michele Dant, Adrien Allward and Jaclyn Stohler.

The Eagles defense also did their part in limiting the Maverick attack to ten shots on goal. The eagle defense was led by senior captain Lauren Dahl, sophomores Jillian Parsons and Christine Graham, and freshman Mary Jacobs.

The Eagles had an opportunity to tie the game late in the second half, when junior Amy Carlton received a pass from senior captain Rachael Hogarth, and broke down the middle of the field, but Carlton’s shot went wide on the Mav’s senior keeper, Angie Pasciolla.

For Milford, it was their second shutout of the season, and the first for keeper Pasciolla. Milford’s record is now 2-2, and Lakeland is 1-1.

Milford’s JV team lost to Lakeland 2-0. The Mav’s fell behind early in the game, but didn’t allow any goals in the second half.

Walled Lake Central (3/30) - Milford controls the game, but can't pull out the win

Milford controlled the play for most of the night, but couldn’t get on the board, losing to Walled Lake Central 2-0.

The game played in the central field for much of the first half, but the Vikings got lucky on a breakaway to score with 13 minutes to go. Milford almost got it back with 3 minutes to go, when co-captain Michelle Dant scored an apparent goal, but the play was called off-sides.

The Lady Mavs came out in the second half with an attitude that they could generate some offense against WLC, as they dominated the play for most of the half by a 70-30 margin and several good scoring chances. At the 25 minute mark, Milford had three straight corner kicks, one falling in the box, but couldn’t finish the play.

Walled Lake got the buffer they needed, when (at 9 minutes) they sent a long over-the-top pass over the Milford defense. The Viking attacker, Kristy Mueller, charged toward the goal, and the Mav’s keeper, Angie Pasciolla, timed her move to the attacker perfectly to make the initial stop, but got unlucky, as the ball bounced back to the Viking attacker, who finished the score. Even though Milford continued to attack, the game ended 2-0.

Milford’s defense played strong all night, led by co-captain Tess Zasuwa, senior Shannon Dunn, junior Alyssa Adams and sophomore Max Howard. The defense played a key role continually turning the play back to the Walled Lake end. Milford’s record fell to 1-2-0.

“The girls played their best game of the season so far. Milford dominated possession, but found it hard breaking down a strong WLC defense. If the same attitude and commitment is kept up throughout the season, things will come good in the end. Special mention for Tess Zasuwa, who was solid in defense, Alyssa Adams and Michelle Dant controlled the midfield and Haley Bensek with some great wing play.”
